Wirksworth is a delightful small town in Derbyshire where my uncle lives. It also happens to host ‘one of the UK’s leading rural arts festivals’, so I put the two together and went for a weekend visit.
Apart from the Derby Chamber Orchestra, a classical guitar quartet, and the Community Walk (featuring storytelling, dance, community choir and the funniest version of Macbeth I’ve ever come across), I saw artists showcased in local shop windows, and nationally significant artists showing in the local church and church hall. People like Denis O’Connor, who lives in the town, and Maggie Cullen, whose work is influenced by the people, heritage and surrounding landscape of the town, creating mythical tableaux.
The other artist whose work I photographed is Iuliu Leonard Mei-Rosu, a recent graduate in Fine Art from the University of Derby.
A visual feast. A most welcoming town with a strong community and houses all higgledy-piggledy up the steep hillside. I will certainly go again next year.
